A man accused of possession of five kilos of heroin with an estimated value of £750,000 told gardai he thought it was a "a load of old washing" Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard today.

Det Garda Philip Collis told prosecuting counsel, Mr Eanna Molloy SC, the accused said when asked in an interview with gardai about the drugs that were found in the boot of his car, he replied he had put a load of washing in the boot that morning.

Det Gda Collis also told Mr Molloy that the approximate street value of the five kilos of heroin was £750,000.

Mr James Bowes (40), River Forest, Leixlip, Co Kildare has pleaded not guilty to possession of the heroin on James St on April 3rd, 2000.

Det Gda Collis told Mr Molloy, he and another garda stopped and searched the man and found the heroin in the boot.

The trial continues before Judge Frank O'Donnell tomorrow.
