Man threatened with axe in Down robbery

A man in his 80s was threatened with an axe during one of two burglaries at homes in Co Down.

A man in his 80s was threatened with an axe during one of two burglaries at homes in Co Down.

The victim was confronted by three men who broke into his home at Sandy Row in Newry at around 8pm yesterday evening. He was held by one of the raiders, who also brandished a brick, while the other two ransacked the house, stealing cash before escaping.

Half an hour earlier, a man aged 30 and his father were robbed at their home in the nearby Meadowlands area of Warrenpoint, Co Down.

A gang of three men armed with sticks forced their way in and demanded money. They made off with an undisclosed sum.
