A man is wanted by gardai in relation to the alleged rape of a 13- year-old girl in west Dublin 11 weeks ago. The girl was found to be pregnant after the alleged rape, according to Garda sources.

The Garda investigation surrounds events in the early hours of Wednesday August 27th. The girl had been baby-sitting for family friends before the incident and the rape is alleged to have happened in a van.

The incident was reported to gardai that night, and the man left the area as soon as the investigation began. Gardai want to question the man, believed to be in his 20s, who was known to the family of the girl. However, they have not issued a public appeal for help in the case.

It is understood that the case is being dealt with by a senior social worker at an Eastern Health Board hospital.

The Garda investigation team has attended a case conference organised by the Health Board, according to Garda sources.

The parents of the child are understood to have taken legal advice on their daughter's situation.

A spokeswoman for the Health Board said she was not aware of the case, and could not comment on individual cases anyway.

If the child was in the care of the Health Board her case would have to be treated in confidence, she said.

It is understood that a care order would not give the Health Board full parental rights and the girl's parents would still have the right to say what their wishes are regarding their daughter.
