A man was crushed under a loading shovel as he tried to put out a fire on board a ship at Dublin Port last April, Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

Mr Michael Murray (51), of Foxfield Grove, Raheny, was the general manager with Portroe Stevedores Ltd who were loading bulk peat moss on to a ship at the Bord na Mona depot on the North Wall when the accident happened on April 24th. He was dead on admission to the Mater Hospital.

Sgt Dan Kennedy, of Store Street Garda station, said Mr Murray appeared to be trying to get to a fire hose when he was struck by the bucket of the loading shovel and crushed under the wheel.

Returning a verdict of accidental death, the jury recommended that a mirror or mirrors be added to the loading shovel to eliminate blind spots.
