A man who claims he blew up Nelson's Pillar in 1966 has said he has been asked to appear at Store Street Garda station this morning in connection with the bombing.

Mr Liam Sutcliffe said in an interview on RTE Radio 1 last April that he blew up the statue on the O'Connell Street landmark in Dublin.

He said gardai got in touch with him after the interview and questioned him last month. He said they asked him to appear at the Garda station today.

Mr Sutcliffe, who lives in Walkinstown, said he refused to answer gardai's questions on who else was involved in the bombing. "I wouldn't make a statement after 34 years," he said yesterday.

He said he was not sure whether the gardai wanted to question him further or to arrest him.

The Garda Press Office said they would not confirm Mr Sutcliffe's appearance at the station as they did not comment on individual cases.

Mr Sutcliffe said he felt the gardai wanted to "close the book on it", but the bombing happened a long time ago.

"It was all those years ago. It would be like someone being arrested in the 1950s for taking over the GPO in 1916," he added.
