A father of four who died after a row broke out in a pub in Co Cork where local people had gathered to watch a rugby match on television has been named as Mr Richie Ryan.

Mr Ryan (40), of Fennell Cottage, Bandon, Co Cork, was pronounced dead at 7.15 p.m. last Sunday just minutes after an altercation occurred at the Bridewell pub in the town.

The dead man, who is originally from Co Laois, received a blow to the chest and fell backwards, hitting his head off the fireplace in the bar.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the office of the State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, was contacted.

A full technical examination was carried out yesterday morning on the area of the bar where Mr Ryan died.

A 25-year-old man was taken to Bandon Garda station on Sunday evening for questioning, but was released without charge yesterday morning.

A file on the case is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Bandon residents have expressed shock at the death of Mr Ryan, who lived in a cottage about three miles outside the town with his wife and young family.

A post-mortem examination was being carried out at Cork University Hospital yesterday afternoon. The results are not yet known.

No funeral arrangements for Mr Ran were available yesterday evening.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
