Gardai have named the man who died after being taken from the River Lee in Cork at the weekend as 44-year-old Michael Kelly, also known as Michael Connors, a native of Wexford who had lived in the UK for several years. A father of four, Mr Kelly arrived in Cork over a year ago and had stayed at the Simon shelter on Anderson's Quay but was sleeping rough around the city prior to his death on Saturday evening.
Mr Peter Nugent (37), from Jesper's Hill, Farringdon, Oxfordshire, who has been charged with assaulting Mr Kelly causing him harm on September 23rd, was yesterday released on bail. Mr Nugent was remanded by Judge Con O'Leary to appear at Cork District Court on November 27th after £300 bail and an independent surety of £3,000 in cash was lodged with the court.
