A Co Galway travelling salesman has been cleared of raping a woman after having swapped places with her sexual partner while she was asleep. An 11-1 majority of the Central Criminal Court jury returned a guilty verdict on a second charge of sexually assaulting the woman.
The 34-year-old married man had denied raping and sexually assaulting the woman at a B& B in Co Cavan on June 4th, 1999. Mr Justice Butler remanded him on continuing bail and listed the case for mention on October 11th next when a sentence date will be fixed.
The salesman had said the woman was awake when the two men exchanged places in her bed and that she had welcomed him "passionately".
