A LIMERICK man who came to the aid of another man who was being assaulted has died in hospital.
Mike Cronin (41) from Limerick city, suffered a serious head injury after he tried to intervene in a row near a pub on the Hyde Road in Limerick, on May 11th last.
He was brought to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital but was later transferred to Cork University Hospital, where he died yesterday morning.
It's understood the 41-year-old was walking home at around 10.30pm on the night of the incident when he went to the defence of a man being assaulted near Quinlivan's pub on the Hyde Road.
However, after he tried to intervene, he was struck from behind. There were a number of people at the scene and gardaí questioned some of them following the assault but nobody has yet been charged in connection with the incident.
A postmortem is due to be carried out today which gardaí said could decide whether their investigation into the assault should be upgraded to a murder or manslaughter inquiry. "An intensive investigation was carried out following this incident and our inquiries will continue," said one source. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Roxboro Garda station on 061-214340.
A spokesperson for Cork University Hospital confirmed that Mr Cronin died yesterday morning. Originally from Coonagh on the outskirts of Limerick, Mr Cronin had been living in the Hyde Road area.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be confirmed later today.
