Man, woman questioned after fatal pub shooting

Gardaí were still questioning two people last night in connection with the murder of a man in a Dublin pub on Sunday night.

Champion kickboxer Jimmy Curran, who was originally from the south inner city, was shot in the head at about 10pm as he drank in the Green Lizard pub on Francis Street.

A man and a woman were arrested in the Dublin 8 area at about 8am yesterday in connection with the investigation.

They are being held at Kevin Street Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and must either be charged or released by Friday morning.

Supt Eddie Quirke, who is leading the investigation, had appealed for patrons of the pub to come forward. Up to 30 people were at a karaoke session there when the shooting occurred.

Witnesses said that a tall, well-dressed, grey-haired man of middle age shot the victim in the head and left on foot, heading in the direction of The Coombe or Thomas Street.

Meanwhile, gardaí said they had received many calls from the public in connection with the discovery of dismembered remains in the Royal Canal a week ago, but had not yet made a breakthrough in the case.

The headless remains of a tall young black man were found in the canal at Ballybough last Wednesday. After the discovery, gardaí had asked landlords to check if any tenants were missing and had appealed to members of ethnic communities to come forward if people were known to be missing.

There has been speculation that the body could be that of Chika Onyemaechi, who has been missing since the body of his estranged wife, Paiche, was found at a river in Kilkenny last summer.

Nobody has been charged with that murder.
