Manchester United have been confirmed as the star attraction for the first soccer match as the new Aviva Stadium, where they will take on an Airtricity League XI on Wednesday August 4th.
“I am really looking forward to going back to Dublin,” said Alex Ferguson, who was also in charge when United made their last visit in 2002, playing against Shelbourne at Tolka Park.
“We have a massive fan base in Ireland. It will be great to play a match on their home turf and I know the Irish supporters will make the atmosphere very special.”
Senior players, including Republic of Ireland internationals John O’Shea and Darron Gibson, are likely to turn out for the pre-season friendly.
The Airtricity League XI will be managed by former Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers and Cork City manager Damien Richardson.
Tickets for the game will go on sale in June, with supporters who purchase tickets for the Republic of Ireland games against Paraguay and Algeria later this month guaranteed first option.
