There has been mixed reaction in Fianna Fail circles to the suggestion that the party's long-time adviser on Northern Ireland, Dr Martin Mansergh, may seek a nomination to contest the Tipperary South byelection, writes Kevin Rafter, Political Reporter.

A senior party source said Dr Mansergh was "interested" in the idea. However, it is believed he would only contest a party convention if he was guaranteed the Fianna Fail nomination.

Such a possibility is unlikely at this stage with two Fianna Fail councillors in the three-seat constituency already indicating they will seek the nomination. The two are Mr Barry O'Brien from Clogheen and Mr Michael Maguire who is based at Lattin East.

The by-election vacancy has occurred due to the death of the Labour Party TD, Mr Michael Ferris. The writ is unlikely to be moved until the autumn.
