A large crowd of mourners turned out last night for the removal of the remains of seven-year-old Robert Costello, who was killed in Mullinavat, Co Kilkenny, at the weekend.
Neighbours, friends and schoolmates filled St Paul's Church in Lisduggan, Waterford, for the short ceremony.
The white coffin, carried by Robert's father, Mr Stephen O'Keeffe, and other relatives, was received by Father Paul Waldron, who told the congregation that Robert's death had hit everybody hard, particularly his family.
He expressed sympathy with Mr O'Keeffe, Robert's mother, Ms Jacqueline Costello, his grandparents, uncles, aunts and other family members. Robert's two brothers, Martin (3) and Stephen (18 months), were not present.
The pallbearers included members of Mr O'Keeffe's and Ms Costello's family.
Introducing the Second Reading, taken from the Letter of St Paul to the Romans, the parish priest, Father Pat Fitzgerald, said it was a reminder that Robert's short life had left a lasting impression, and he would always be a gift to his family and others.
The large number of wreaths included two which spelt out the name of Robert's favourite football team, "Man Utd". The funeral takes place today after 10.30 a.m. Mass.
Robert's mother, Ms Costello, was charged on Sunday with his murder.
