Mapping flood risks to the Shannon river is to be examined by the inter-departmental committee set up four years ago, the Seanad has heard.

The Minister of State for Finance, Mr Martin Cullen, said he would ask the committee to review the recent flooding and to look at the question of floodrisk mapping. "I am satisfied this course of action is essential and the information will be invaluable, particularly for local authorities in dealing with planning applications and the preparation of development plans."

Members were debating the Interim Report on Flooding on the River Shannon by the Joint Committee on Public Enterprise and Transport Sub-Committee on the River Shannon Authority. Mr Cullen said the Government welcomed the recommendations.
