British telecom equipment maker Marconi today predicted a recovery in the moribund telecoms equipment market by the end of 2001.

Marconi, Britain's largest telecoms equipment maker, said it did not see any improvement in general market conditions in the first half of the financial year to March.

But chief executive Mr George Simpson said: "Due to increasing underlying demand by businesses and consumers for communications services and the absence of significant over capacity in Europe, we anticipate the market will recover around the end of this calendar year, initially led by European incumbent and established operators.

"On this basis, we believe that we can achieve growth for the full year," he said in a statement.
