Several US Marines were wounded in an explosion while clearing old ordnance at Kandahar airport in southern Afghanistan today, CNN reported.
The US network said the explosion came as US forces continued efforts they began on Friday to remove explosives left by the retreating Taliban and unexploded ordnance dropped by US planes. CNN said it did not know the number or condition of the casualties but said emergency vehicles had rushed to the scene and helicopters were taking away the wounded.
The United States intends to use the large airport on the outskirts of the main city in southern Afghanistan instead of the airbase they first occupied in the desert when the Taliban still held Kandahar.
