LIMERICK’S MARKET Quarter will echo with music and enjoy a carnival atmosphere when the city’s newest downtown area hosts a spectacular mardi gras street party.
The free event takes place on July 3rd and follows the recent reopening of Limerick’s famous Milk Market – one of the oldest market places in the country.
Established in 1852, the Milk Market reopened last weekend under a new all-weather guise following the completion of a €2 million redevelopment programme which has transformed the historic venue.
According to Liam Flannery, chairman of the Market Quarter, the redevelopment presented a great opportunity to act as a catalyst for wider change in the area.
The Market Quarter is the brainchild of a group of business people who made the decision to work together to drive business forward in their areas.
“We feel that the overall result can generate a positive image for Limerick city, retain business and jobs within the city centre and create a community template for other areas of Limerick city,” they said.
Speaking at the launch of the mardi gras street party, Mayor of Limerick Cllr Kevin Kiely congratulated all of those involved.
The party begins with a street closure at 6pm from Patrick Street to the top of Upper Denmark Street and over to the Robert Street/Carr Street junction.
The main stage will be set up at Chapel Street with the Roaring Forties Dublin Jump Jive Jazz/Swing Band performing from 8pm and other live music throughout the evening.
