Market round-up: ISEQ records modest rise

The ISEQ closed modestly higher today having spent most of today's session in the red. At the close of business the Irish benchmark was 8 points higher at 6,267.

Leading blue chips were flat today with gains in AIB and CRH countered by a 450-cent loss in Elan. With little news from the Irish corporate sector the market took its lead from London and New York.

In London the FTSE 100 index closed flat at 5,796.1, having traded in a near 100-point range through the session.

Boots, the healthcare retailer, was 3.5 per cent higher after posting a 1.8 per cent rise in full-year profits before tax and exceptional items, broadly as expected.

On Wall Street share rebounded after yesterday's losses. The Dow Jones rose 29.79 to 10,902.43 and the S&P 500 index was up 5.01 to 1,253.09. The Nasdaq, which closed more than 4 per cent lower yesterday, gained 27.76 to 2,112.26.
