One of the most experienced barristers working in criminal law, senior counsel Martin Giblin has worked on the McBrearty case for the past nine years and has been a key figure in cases which pre-dated the Morris tribunal.
He began representing the McBrearty family nine years ago, shortly after Frank McBrearty jnr and his cousin Mark McConnell were arrested and falsely accused of the murder of cattle dealer Richie Barron in 1996.
He took a series of legal cases on behalf of the McBrearty family in relation to the activities of gardaí in Donegal which helped to unearth information that led to the establishment of the Morris tribunal.
Last year he was also centrally involved in the negotiations with the State on behalf of Frank McBrearty jnr, who received a settlement of 1.5 million for his wrongful arrest and an apology from the State.
Called to the Bar in 1974, Mr Giblin became a senior counsel in 1996. He has specialised as a criminal barrister, and has appeared for the defence in a series of high-profile murder and criminal cases in the last decade. He also was one of the senior members of the legal team representing the Irish Haemophilia Society at the Lindsay tribunal.
