Martin unveils drugs-awareness campaign

The Minister for Health, Mr Martin, today announced a campaign to raise public awareness about the drugs issue in Ireland.

The Minister for Health, Mr Martin, today announced a campaign to raise public awareness about the drugs issue in Ireland.

Part of the National Drugs Strategy, the first phase of the National Drugs Awareness Campaign will feature television and radio advertising supported by a brochure and website.

According to the Department of Health, a recent Health Research Board survey found three out of every four Irish people do not have enough information, or have the wrong information, about drugs.

The campaign hopes to foster discussion on approaches to prevention of drugs misuse by promoting dialogue and information about drugs.

Mr Martin said: "Facts, information, counselling, advice, resources are all there, and part of our objective in the campaign is to help people find them when they need them".

The National Drugs Strategy comprises over 100 actions whose aim is to "reduce the harm caused to individuals and society by the misuse of drugs through a concerted focus on the four pillars of supply reduction, prevention, treatment and research".
