Boxing: Leicester binman Rendall Munroe has won the European super-bantamweight title with a sublime majority decision win over Spanish champion Kiko Martinez in Nottingham.

'La Sensacion' Martinez, 22, came to the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre with a daunting reputation and stellar unbeaten record including a win over former champion and Dubliner Bernard Dunne in The Point last year.

The 27-year-old Munroe, however, made a mockery of his reputation as a fearsome power puncher with a measured, classy performance to take a well deserved — if unexpected — majority decision victory, with scores of 115-113 twice and 114-114.

"It's fantastic," Munroe said afterwards. "Obviously I'd been told by my trainers what to do, follow the gameplan. And that's why they are there, to tell me what to do."

Asked about the almost mythical power of Martinez, Munroe said: "He was nothing spectacular.

"I've been sparring Jason Booth and Carl Johanneson. Everyone says they can't believe I am an eight stone 10 pounds fighter with the size that I am."

The 27-year-old, who is a refuse collector by day, revealed he will be back to work as normal next week.

"Definitely, I'll be back there on Tuesday," he said.
