the Tánaiste married Mr Geoghegan in a registry office ceremony in Dublin at 4.30 p.m.

Mr Geoghegan is Director of Economic Affairs at IBEC and chairman of FÁS.

The spokesman told ireland.comthe Tánaiste attended the North/South Ministerial Council and the British-Irish Council in Dublin Castle yesterday. She then attended a meeting between Greencore and the IFA over the beet dispute.

"She left the meeting early as it was near resolution, went home to change and then got married," he said

He said she will have a small private celebration at Christmas with family and friends, and is asking the media to respect her privacy.

The couple are expected to leave on honeymoon some time after Christmas.

The Tánaiste is attending the Progressive Democrats' National General Council in Thurles today, where she received cheers and applause when the news of the wedding reach the meeting.

Meanwhile when he heard the news Taoiseach Mr Bertie Ahern said: "I want to congratulate Mary and Brian and wish them every happiness for the future."
