Local people in Charleville, north Cork, are expected to join with many of the town's Brazilian community tonight for a special Mass for a 47-year-old Brazilian man who died following an assault in the town last week.
The body of father of three Alberto Do Prado Oliveira will lie in repose at the Holy Cross Church in Charleville tonight before the Mass, which will be celebrated in Portuguese and English by chaplain to the Brazilian community Fr SeáLawlor.
Fr Lawlor said Mr Oliveira's friends in the Brazilian community in Charleville have established a fund to help raise the money necessary to return his body to his home town of Anapolis, in Goias state, central Brazil, for burial.
Mr Oliveira had come to Charleville about 2½ years ago and was working in the Galtee Meats plant on the outskirts of the town. He had been joined in Cork just four months ago by his wife, Sueli, who got work in a local restaurant.
Ms Oliveira, whose three sons live in Brazil with relatives, attended a special rosary for her husband in Charleville on Sunday night.
It is expected that Ms Oliveira will travel back to Brazil with her husband's remains later this week.
Meanwhile, another Brazilian, 43-year-old father of two José Domingos, Old Limerick Road, Charleville, has been remanded in custody after being charged at the weekend with assault causing serious harm to Mr Oliveira at Main Street, Charleville, on September 21st.
