Mass to be held for soldier who died in East Timor

The service for Pte Ó Flatharta (21) will be held at 6 p.m. this evening in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Tiernee, Lettermore, in Connemara.

A mass and full military funeral for Pte Ó Flatharta will be held at noon tomorrow at Trabane in Galway.

Pte Flaherty was a member of the 1st Infantry Battalion based at Dun Ui Mhaoiliosa, Galway. He joined the Defence Forces in November 1999 and began his tour of duty in East Timor on February 5th this year.

Pte Flaherty was a member of a patrol operating in the area of Fataluro, about 3 kilometres from the Irish Contingent base near the village of Taroman. He is the 84th member of the Defence Forces to die overseas.
