Match to decide 'Fr Ted' festival rights

There may be no rows about flags and anthems, no protests, no queues and no ticket touts

There may be no rows about flags and anthems, no protests, no queues and no ticket touts. However, if it's ancient rivalries and historic battles you want, forget about Croke Park - Kilronan's beach is the place to be at low tide tomorrow on the Aran island of Inis Mór.

Even Irish World Cup legends John Aldridge and Tony Cascarino are said to be nervous about the outcome of the Craggy Cup. Both were hired to train the two island teams competing for the right to hold next year's Friends of Ted festival.

"Training" means catching a weekend ferry or aircraft on time and ensuring the rival Inis Mór and Inis Oirr players are not tempted to revert to Gaelic football during the five-a-side soccer match.

The fact that Father Ted, the Channel 4 series starring Dermot Morgan, was not filmed on either island, but in Co Clare, is a minor detail - as it was for the organisers of the inaugural Father Ted gathering, Peter Philips and Fergal McGrath.

"We actually thought about Inishbofin originally," Mr Philips said.

He says the "row" that erupted between Inis Mór and Inis Oirr over the right to hold the event was not a marketing ploy.

"I suggested we settle it with a five-a-side match, by which time I was already getting calls from television stations in Australia and Canada."
