League of Ireland/FAI Cup:Drogheda United are on the hunt for a new manager after Alan Mathews stepped down following last Saturday's 6-0 defeat to Sligo Rovers, which left the club with just seven points from a possible 42.
The loss left them just three points ahead of Bray Wanderers who themselves were beaten 6-0 by UCD recently.
“Unfortunately results have not been good enough and I feel that I have gone as far as I can with this group of players,” said Mathews this evening.
“'By going now it will allow the club to get someone new in with enough time to hopefully turn things around.
“I would like to thank the board and the players for their efforts this season.”
Mathews paid tribute to the “terrific supporters who played no small part in keeping the team in the Premier Division last season and who have stood by the team this season despite some unacceptable performances.”
