HOPEFULLY, we have had the last of the night frosts and tender bedding plants can be moved out of doors. In pots, window boxes etc., they will brighten and enliven the garden immediately.
To do well and give of their best some care must be given to preparation there is little point in spending money and not getting the full effect. If plants are to grow and flower in profusion for the summer and autumn months they must be fed. The wise gardener will change the compost or potting mixture in all containers now.
Ready made and packaged potting compost will be available in every outlet. However, I prefer to mix up my own using best garden soil enriched with well decayed garden compost or leaf mould. Once upon a time I mixed in peat and coarse sand but I do not bother now, the garden soil is sufficiently friable and free draining after successive digging and manuring I steal soil from the vegetable patch.
Whatever course you choose, be mindful of the needs of young plants, nourishment and water. Also plant generously, packing them in; we want indulgence and instant gratification, not some distant promise.
