THE NORTH Mayo community of Ballycastle has been shocked by the death, following an assault, in Australia of a local man.
Colm Kenny (29), who has died in hospital in Brisbane, was badly injured in an assault at the resort of Byron Bay, on May 11th. Police have now charged a man, who turned himself in, with Mr Kenny's murder.
Mr Kenny was a talented footballer playing on the Mayo minor team but his career was cut short when he sustained a back injury.
He left Ireland with a friend to work in Australia last September. Friends and neighbours were reluctant to discuss the tragedy yesterday following a request for privacy by the Kenny family.
The dead man's father John is a former detective garda. He is also survived by his mother, Mary, and two older brothers.
