THE Co Mayo priest who was granted leave of absence by the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary, earlier this month has said he will continue with his GAA activities in the county. But he gave no indication as to when he would resume his priestly responsibilities.

Father Noel Forde, parish priest at Breaffy, Castlebar, who is chairman of the Mayo GAA County Board, said yesterday: "At present I am stepping back from parish duties for a short while to reflect and pray.

"I have been a GAA man all my life and will continue being one. The organisation will always have my support. My commitment to the GAA is steadfast and I will continue to give it the full commitment I have always given it."

Father Forde led the Mayo senior squad to the All-Ireland final reply against Meath last September.

Earlier this month Dr Neary, in a statement to parishioners, said: "You will be aware that there has been a great deal of rumour surrounding the circumstances of Father Forde's absence from the parish during the past fortnight. This has caused a great deal of hurt to many people.

"Father Noel returned from his holiday on Friday last and came to see me. He was distressed by the media interest which had arisen. He asked that he be afforded a period of time for reflection and prayer. In order to help him in this regard I have given him leave of absence from his parish duties. I hope that he will now be able to find the opportunity for reflection."
