Kilkenny and Galway served up a fine game of hurling at Nowlan Park but Brian Cody's All-Ireland champions ran out four point winners on a 1-19 to 0-18 scoreline.

Galway, with wind advantage in the first half, shaded the best of the opening spell and dominated in defence and midfield where David Collins was inspirational.

Ger Loughnan's team led by three points the break with Eugene Cloonan scoring four of their total and Richie Power in turn bagging five of Kilkenny's nine.

Galway could have pulled further ahead just three minutes after the restart but when awarded a penalty, Cloonan - on instruction from the sideline - opted for a point.

Kilkenny regrouped smartly after that and pulled back into contention when Eoin McCormack found the Galway net 10 minutes into the half.

A strong defence held firm for the remainder, paving the way for Kilkenny to win in front of 10,000 spectators.

In football, Mayo secured a semi-final spot with a dramatic win over Dublin in Castlebar.

Dublin were helped by the breeze in the first half and were full value for a five point lead at half-time.

Bernard Brogan, Colin Moran and Kevin Bonner all found their range and regularly penetrated a Mayo defence that worked over time in the opening half.

But Conal Keaney's sending off early in the second half proved a massive setback for the visitors and Mayo, as a result, forged their way back into the contest.

Indeed, they dominated possession to such an extent that Dublin failed to score at all in the second half.

Andy Moran, David Heaney, Conor Mortimer and Alan  Dillon scored for Mayo and Mayo took the lead when Mortimer slotted over a free eight minutes from time.

Dublin, though, were awarded a late penalty when Jason Sherlock was upended but Diarmuid Connolly's resulting spot-kick hit the post.
