An action for damages lodged by the family of murdered Tyrone woman Michaela McAreavey against the former Legends Hotel in Mauritius has been adjourned until January 21st.
Now known as the Lux Hotel, it made a court application yesterday for the case to be adjourned.
John McAreavey and five other members of Ms McAreavey’s family are claiming damages of 65 million rupees (€1.6 million).
They claim the murder of Ms McAreavey (27), who was on her honeymoon in Mauritius with her husband when she was killed in January 2011, occurred as a consequence of the hotel’s failure to ensure its obligations around security were fulfilled.
Apart from the civil action, the McAreavey and Harte families are pushing for a retrial of the two former hotel workers, Avinash Treebhoowoon and Sandip Moneea, who, following a lengthy trial, were found not guilty of her murder.
The families indicate the damages and interest they are claiming from the hotel will be transferred to the Michaela Foundation Trust, which will fund the education of vulnerable children.
