Johannesburg - A Mozambique court has decided to formally charge the former African National Congress fighter, Mr Robert McBride, with gun-running, espionage and "conspiring with wrong-doers," Mr McBride's wife, Paula, told The Irish Times yesterday.

But papers detailing the charges have not yet been served on Mr McBride in Machava maximum security prison near the Mozambican capital of Maputo, Patrick Laurence writes. Lawyers representing Mr McBride - who was arrested on March 9th and who has been held in solitary confinement since then - plan to appeal against the decision to the Supreme Court as soon as the papers have been served on their client. They believe that the Supreme Court will reject the decision if it can be persuaded to appraise the case against Mr McBride.
