Gerald McCarthy has been named as Cork's new hurling manager on a two year deal.
The All-Ireland winning captain was appointed by the county board late last night.
McCarthy has previously been involved in the coaching set-up at Cork with Michael O'Brien and was Waterford manager from 1997 until 2001.
McCarthy won five All-Irelands as a player.
McCarthy's first task is to choose three selectors for the beaten All-Ireland finalists, while a fourth will be provided by county champions Erin's Own.
He had initially ruled himself out of the race to succeed John Allen, but was re-approached by the sub-committee set up to fill the position and apparently convinced to change his mind.
It remains to be seen if outgoing selector Ger Cunningham - who was the early favourite to succeed Allen - will remain on board in some capacity.
