Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy will contact Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson today to discuss Roy Keane's current knee problem.
McCarthy, in Abu Dhabi for the second leg of the United Arab Emirates' clash with Iran in the Asian Group qualifier, is desperate for Keane to play some role in the Republic's World Cup play-off against the winners.
The Asian nations meet on Wednesday with Iran leading 1-0 from the first leg in Tehran.
The Republic boss hopes to name his play-off squad later this week, with the first match in Dublin on Saturday, November 10th (6pm) and the return in the Middle East five days later.
"To date I have not spoken to Roy or Alex but have heard all the reports from home about Keane's knee problem." said McCarthy.
"I am delighted that Alex will be happy to do his best to allow Roy to play in one of our most important World Cup games in years."
Ferguson might want to keep skipper Keane wrapped in cotton wool for the first game in Dublin but allow him to travel for the second leg.
"I would be happy to go along with that suggestion," said McCarthy.
"I know that Roy is desperately keen to lead his country to the World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea next summer. Hopefully with 12 days remaining before the first match at Lansdowne Road, he can overcome his injury problems."
However, the Manchester United skipper has already been ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League game against Lille in France and Sunday's Premiership clash with Liverpool at Anfield.
