Two international trade union groups have called for a worldwide consumer boycott of McDonald's on October 16th because of what they say is its blatant disregard of labour laws, Dutch daily De Volkskranthas reported.
It said the boycott is being called during a five-day conference this week of the International Free Trades Union Federation and the International Union of Food Workers.
"McDonald's does keep the law in The Netherlands. But in Germany an outlet will threaten closure if the workers set up a workers' council," a spokesman for the Dutch Trades Union Federation said yesterday.
Another union source said the company avoided signing any collective pay deals in the United States, Britain, Ireland and Turkey and will in many cases refuse to hire union members.
According to the paper, McDonald's international management was invited to attend the conference but declined.
