The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner has completed its move from Dublin to Co Laois under decentralisation proposals announced by the Minister for Finance over three years ago.

Minister for Justice Michael McDowell officialy opened the new offices in Portarlington, Co. Laois, this morning.

He was joined by party colleague and Minister of State at the Office of Public Works Tom Parlon.

The Government agency, which has responsibility for protecting the rights of individuals over how their personal information is used, employs 24 staff at the new office at Canal House, Station Road, Portarlington.

Earlier this month, it was reported that almost all staff members at the new offices are newly employed.

Twenty-one of the independent agency's original 22 staff refused to move from Dublin earlier this year and have been redeployed within the Department of Justice, Equality and Law reform and its agencies.
