The Justice Minister Michael McDowell is to meet the Donegal publican at the centre of the garda corruption inquiry, the Morris Tribunal, it emerged tonight.

A Government spokesperson confirmed that Mr McDowell will hold formal talks with Frank McBrearty Jnr and his lawyers at his department's offices in Dublin on May 6.

Mr McBrearty said tonight: "I will be telling the minister that I want justice from the Irish government.

"I have been waiting for this meeting for over three years."

Tribunal sittings are currently adjourned while Justice Frederic Morris prepares a report into the Barron investigation module of the inquiry.

Frank McBrearty Snr walked out of the Tribunal earlier this month because the State would not guarantee his legal costs until after the module concluded.

Justice Morris is expected to deliver his latest report to Mr McDowell in early June and make a ruling on legal costs at the end of July.

Public sittings at the Tribunal, which has heard evidence from 300 witnesses over 330 days since 2002, are scheduled to resume on June 13.

The inquiry was set up after allegations of garda intimidation by the McBrearty family during the investigation into the suspicious death of Raphoe cattle dealer Richie Barron on a local roadside in October 1996.
