The North's Education Minister, Mr Martin McGuinness, has launched a draft action plan to address racism within the education system. The plan was drawn up in conjunction with the Equality Commission.
"Racism in any form is unacceptable and we have a duty to tackle it wherever it appears," he said.
"In the plan, we will examine a range of issues, including the development of effective provision for pupils with English as a second language; training at all levels, including boards of governors, teachers and pupils; and greater co-ordination between all those involved in this type of work."
Mr McGuinness also launched a leaflet and poster campaign, produced by the Equality Commission and the Irish National Consultative Committee, on racism and inter-culturalism.
The Equality Commission's chief commissioner, Ms Joan Harbinson, said schools played a crucial role in developing an inclusive society.
"During their school years, children can learn to respect each other and welcome diversity or they can learn hostility and prejudice. The draft action plan establishes a sound foundation on which we can build a programme designed to promote equality and good relations and eliminate racial prejudice from our classrooms and playgrounds.
"This is a project which can make a real difference," she said.
