The Government has decided to advise the President, Mrs McAleese, to appoint Dr Bryan M.E. McMahon a judge of the Circuit Court, with effect from Thursday, May 20th.
A native of Listowel, Co Kerry, Dr McMahon is a member of the Commission on European Contact Law and has served as chairman of the National Crime Forum. As chairman he said the public should be consulted and expressed his view that they often felt "excluded from the debate".
He was a professor of law at University College Cork from 1967 to 1988, a part-time professor of common law at NUI Galway and a solicitor with Houlihan McMahon of Ennis, Co Clare.
He is co-author, with Prof William Binchy, of Irish Law of Torts. He studied law at UCD and at the Harvard Law School. Dr McMahon was recommended for appointment by the Judicial Appointments Board.
