A fund raising drive has been launched to erect a monument to the Irish Brigade which fought at Antietam, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, in the bloodiest one day battle of the American Civil War.
The Irish Cultural Society Foundation of Maryland plans to commemorate the 540 members of the brigade, led by Waterford born Thomas Francis Meagher, who were killed or wounded in the crucial battle on September 17th, 1862.
