Civil defence members will patrol Laytown beach today as a safety measure for the duration of the village's annual beach races. Six second World War incendiary devices were washed ashore over the weekend. At yesterday's meeting of Meath County Council, the county manager, Mr Joe Ho ran, said signs warning the public of the danger of the devices had been erected at the entrances to Laytown and Bettystown beaches.

Irish Marine Emergency Services had ensured adequate searches took place after they were first found on the coastline last Wednesday. Laytown councillor Mr Tom Kelly said "the polluter will have to pay" principle should apply and he sought the support of the council in asking the Ministers for the Marine and Foreign Affairs to take it up with the British government.
