A man was killed in a car crash in Co Westmeath this morning.

A man was killed in a car crash in Co Westmeath this morning.

The man, who is in his 70s, was driving a car that hit a wall at Ballinderry, Moate at around 11.50am. There were no other people in the car and no other vehicles involved.

Meanwhile, one of two women knocked down by a car in Co Meath yesterday afternoon has died in hospital.

The women, who are understood to be sisters, were walking across a road at Ninch, Coast Road, Laytown at around 6.50pm when they were struck by the car.

Both were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda, where one died last night. She was in her 80s. Her name has not yet been released.

The second woman is said to be in a stable condition.

Gardaí at Laytown are appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact them.

The deaths bring the number of fatalities on the State's roads so far this year to 367. A total of 396 people died on the roads in 2005.
