A memorial park to remember victims of the St Phelim aircraft, which crashed off Tuskar Rock killing 61 passengers and crew, is to be erected at Rosslare Harbour.

The Aer Lingus Viscount crashed off the Co Wexford coast in 1968.

The air disaster recovery operation was based at Rosslare Harbour.

No memorial was ever erected, but the local Rosslare Harbour/Kilrane Environment Group plans to rectify that.

The park will feature a centrepiece of stone from Mount Leinster sculpted by Niall Deacon and set in water with three panels signifying the portholes of the Viscount in descent, and a chain with 61 links.

The €80,000 landscaped park will also honour the 10 men who lost their lives in a storm during the construction of Tuskar Rock Lighthouse, lightkeeper Paddy Scanlon, who died when a mine hit the lighthouse during the second World War, and deceased members of the RNLI.
