The memory of a most respected and popular journalist was honoured last night when the Tom McPhail Journalism Bursary was announced in Dublin.

The bursary will help to fund the education of young journalism students, particularly those from less fortunate backgrounds. Some corporate and private donations have already been made, and fund-raising activities are being organised.

Last night Mr Sean Duignan, broadcaster and former government press secretary, introduced the bursary at a function in Mulligans, Poolbeg Street, which was a favourite public house for Mr McPhail and many media people.

Mr McPhail died last July aged 47. He was a founder and partner in the news agency Ireland International. He was known for his commitment to journalism and his help to others and for his integrity and high standards.

In a crowded pub, Mr Duignan paid tribute:

"The Tom McPhail Journalism Bursary is a fitting memorial and worthy legacy to one of the all-time greats of Irish journalism. Tom is sure to smile down on those who benefit from it."
