Gardai in Galway believe they have identified two American students as being involved in the stabbing of Malcolm O'Shaughnessy, who died after a fracas in Galway city on August 1st. One of the students is believed to have since returned to the US.

They also believe the two men were attacked by a group of local men which included the victim. Mr O'Shaughnessy (22) is thought to have fallen in with a rowdy group leaving a disco off Eyre Square. They attacked a number of other men before encountering the two students, who were on holiday in the west. One of the students is thought to have produced a camping knife when he and his friend were waylaid. Mr O'Shaughnessy was stabbed and died soon afterwards.
