Met Éireann has issued a warning as winds reach storm force around the country today.
The service said storms will see "potentially damaging" gusts of 120 to 150kph. The most severe winds will be over Ulster, Connacht, and north Leinster.
Motorists have been advised to reduce their speed and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) advised motorists to watch out for fallen debris and vehicles veering across the roads and to use dipped headlights. It also advised not to drive across flooded roads if possible, and urged pedestrians and cyclists to wear bright clothing.
Southeast to southwest gales, increasing to storm force, have been forecast for all coasts and on the Irish Sea.
Met Éireann said heavy rain today will be followed later by showers of hail, sleet and snow. There will also be scattered thunderstorms and snow in some places tonight.
The winds will ease tomorrow, although rain will become more widespread.
