One of Mexico's most powerful drug lords has been captured after a gun battle with troops in the border city of Matamoros.

One of Mexico's most powerful drug lords has been captured after a gun battle with troops in the border city of Matamoros.

At least one soldier was wounded before Mr Osiel Cardenas was captured in Matamoros, just across the border from Texas.

Mr Cardenas (35) is the alleged leader of the Gulf cartel, one of Mexico's largest drug smuggling gangs and is accused of threatening to kill several US drug and customs agents.

A reward worth around €2 million was on offer from the FBI for his capture. PA
