Who is covered and how it works.
The MIBI is a non-profit-making registered company set up in 1955 by the government and motor insurance companies operating here to compensate innocent victims of crashes caused by uninsured and unidentified vehicles.
The MIBI also operates a 'green card' system, which ensures that Irish citizens who sustain loss or are injured in crashes caused by foreign-registered vehicles here are not disadvantaged. It can also assist Irish residents who have sustained injuries or loss in crashes in other EU states.
All insurance companies underwriting motor insurance in Ireland must contribute to funding for claims in proportion to market share. The average cost passed on to motorists' policies is in the region of €45 per year.
