Mr Frank Conroy, the Fine Gael supporter who passed a cheque for £33,000, equivalent to $50,000, to the party from the late Mr David Austin, is a director of Sean Barrett Bloodstock Insurances Ltd.

The Fine Gael TD Mr Sean Barrett is also a director of the company. Mr Barrett was part of the Fine Gael group behind a fund-raising event in New York which led to the payment.

According to Fine Gael, a cheque from the late Mr Austin and made payable to Mr Conroy, was endorsed by Mr Conroy and then given to the party.

Mr Austin had earlier received $50,000 from Telenor and had lodged it to an account in Jersey.

Mr Conroy (73), who lives in Killiney, Co Dublin, is also a director of Leopardstown Club Ltd and Navan Races Ltd. He could not be contacted last night.

Other directors of Sean Barrett Bloodstock Insurances Ltd are: Mr Colm Moloney, of College Grove, Castleknock, Co Dublin; Mr David Nagle, Grangecon, Co Wicklow; Mr Eddie Irwin, of Cashel, Co Tipperary; Mr John Magnier, of Fethard, Co Tipperary; and Mr Thomas Hyde, also of Cashel, Co Tipperary.
