A fitness to practise inquiry into allegations against a Co Dublin midwife got under way in private yesterday.

The hearing was instituted by An Bord Altranais, the Nursing Board, after complaints were made against domiciliary midwife, Ms Ann O Ceallaigh.

The complaints were made by the master of a Dublin maternity hospital and the matron of another hospital.

Ms O Ceallaigh denies an allegation that she delayed the transfer of a mother to hospital, in a way which could potentially have caused damage to mother and baby. Both were healthy after the delivery.

The woman whose delivery gave rise to the complaint is understood to have given evidence at the hearing.

She said last December she did not want the inquiry to proceed and she feared she was being used to "get at" Ms O Ceallaigh.
